We boarded our floating palace, tracked by envious eyes from Ndhovu Lodge's deck. Soon nothing disturbed our peace but the wash of our wake and nimble wire-tailed swallows darting all about. As we cruised slowly past the shore on our way to our river island for the night, the low-slung sun picked out a slow procession of elephants filing to the river edge.

As we cruised slowly past the shore on our way to our river island for the night, the low-slung sun picked out a slow procession of elephants filing to the river edge.

Before we knew it there were some 25 pachyderms, all heights and sizes, lining the water, a mangle of legs and trunks creating the graphic angles of a woodblock print. It was quite magical, hearing nothing but the swish-swish-swish of water being siphoned up their trunks. We sat quietly watching them till night blotted out the daylight, then we repaired to our mooring to salute the stars after another Difficult Day in Africa.
