Grootvadersbosch, the third conservancy visited in our week-long, 875-kilometre, off-road circular trip through three Cape Nature reserves… Think innovative wood cabins with a double-volume entertainment space that opens up on three sides to the surrounding woodland. Walks and hikes in fynbos and rare Tsitsikamma-style indigenous forest are the main focus here, but you could spot a grysbok, bushbuck or even the nocturnal Cape (large spotted) genet resting up in a tree during the daytime.

Cape Nature is doing a really good job with its conservancies. Right now I’m talking Gamkaberg, Anysberg and Grootvadersbosch. Tucked between the swarthy muscled Swartberg and, variously, the lovely Outeniqua mountains or the elongated elegant Langeberg, the accommodation at each nature reserve is original, well-thought-out and well-maintained. We were impressed that we never had to ask for a bird or plant list — it was all simply handed to us, and lists were always of good print quality. Overall things generally worked! SANParks, are you listening?!
