It’s the funniest thing … the towns I got the least excited about are the ones that have turned out the best (and the longest) as photo essays. What gives? Perhaps in Porto’s case, it was the miz grey skies that got me down — but when I look at the pictures, the city didn’t hold back from offering up offbeat photo opportunities in every corner.

So … what is Porto famous for? Well, port, for one thing. (Sorry. We didn’t try it.) A gunmetal-grey bridge designed by creator of the Eiffel Tower. A historic stretch on the Douro River of tightly packed buildings with red roofs and painted façades. Iron lacework balconies, pretty tiles, vividly creative tinned sardines, funky graffiti. And great modern food. So, in the end, what was not to like?
