It’s named after a saint. It’s on the Bay of Biscay in the north of Spain. And it’s near the French border. That’s San Sebastián. Europeans love the city for its powder-sand beaches. When the sun shines, the sea is the colour of Indian turquoise. So, yes, there’s kind of a surf culture here. But there’s also a gentle elegance to San Sebastián with its Belle Epoque flourishes.

But there’s also a gentle elegance to San Sebastián with its Belle Epoque flourishes on street lamps, in elaborately sculpted statues and along pretty promenades. San Sebastián had its roots in aristocracy, when Isabella II made the seaside town fashionable in the 1850s, and it’s still steeped in aristocracy today … well, FOOD aristocracy if you count the plethora of Michelin-rated restaurants and their gastro trailblazing chefs (so far up to 18 restaurants have received a mention in the 2017 Michelin guide, a whole lot of them with 1 star, three with the glorious, generally unattainable trio!).
